Chromium-6, a metal famous by Erin Brockovich, was found in water at levels at or above 0.02 parts per billion in 90 percent of 60,000 water samples the EPA had tested.
Chloride Found at Levels that Can Harm Aquatic Life in Urban Streams of the Northern U.S.–Winter Deicing a Major Source September 16, 2009 – Recent study released to determine the causes of excess chloride in water tables in the North. The abstract states, “Use of salt for deicing roads and parking lots in the winter is a major source of chloride. Other sources include wastewater treatment, septic systems, and farming operations.” Apparently softener salt is such a minor contributor that it’s not even mentioned in the abstract. However on page 12 (page 22 of the PDF) of the study they state: “In 2005, salt for water treatment represented 3.1 percent of salt use in the United States (Kostick and others, 2007).” Makes you wonder why California didn’t conduct a similar study or take this into account before banning water softeners in certain counties.

Drinking Water
Medicated Bath Products to Blame for Worsening Water Pollution March 25, 2010 – For the first time, a study unveiled at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society points out that a major source of active pharmaceutical ingredients in water comes from bathing, showering, and laundering. According to Dr. Ilene Ruhoy, “lotions, creams, gels and skin patches are to blame for a significant amount of the APIs in ground water.”
Studies Reveal Why Drinking Water Wells are Vulnerable to Contamination February 11, 2010 – A new groundwater study performed by the US Geological Survey explains what, when, and how contaminants may reach public-supply wells. They studied aquifers in Florida, California, Nebraska, and Connecticut. According to the study, “More than 100 million people in the United States receive their drinking water from public groundwater systems, which can be vulnerable to naturally occurring contaminants such as radon, uranium, arsenic, and man-made compounds, including fertilizers, septic-tank leachate, solvents and gasoline hydrocarbons.”
Convoy of Hope and Culligan Team Up to Bring Drinkable Water to Haiti January 27, 2010 – Culligan is donating 3 water purification systems that can produce up to 15,000 gallons of drinking water per day to the Convoy of Hope to help survivors of the devastating Haiti earthquakes. Culligan has already sent 250,000 bottles of drinking water that were on the ground within days of the earthquake. “These water purification systems will help save lives,” said Hal Donaldson, founder and president, Convoy of Hope.
That Tap Water is Legal, but May Be Unhealthy December 16, 2009 – The NY Times continues to investigate 35 year old drinking water standards and laws that regulate 91 contaminants when the EPA estimates there are nearly 60,000 chemicals in use in the United States. The article points out, “scientists have scrutinized thousands of those chemicals in recent decades, and identified hundreds associated with a risk of cancer and other diseases at small concentrations in drinking water, according to an analysis of government records by The New York Times.”
Millions in US drink dirty water, records show December 7, 2009 – According to the opening paragraph of the article, “More than 20 percent of the nation’s water treatment systems have violated key provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act over the last five years, according to a New York Times analysis of federal data.”
Cocaine, Spices, Hormones Found in Drinking Water November 12, 2009 – Unexpected “ingredients” are finding there way into water all over the world, however this study reviews the ongoing water chemistry in the Pugent Sound. They’ve noted that the types of spices vary depending on the time of year and have even tracked a spike in vanilla and chocolate in the water on weekends.
Comfort Food: Chocolate, water reduce pain response to heat October 14, 2009 – Interesting study that demonstrates that rats respond more slowly to pain when eating a chocolate chip or sugar water. The novel part of the study is that the same delayed response to pain occurred when the rats had regular water infused into their mouths. Therefore suggesting that the calories in “comfort food” are not what provide the comfort as there are no calories in water.
Toxic Waters September 12, 2009 – An in-depth study national study performed by the New York Times where they claim that 1 in 10 Americans drinks contaminated water. Rural well water linked to Parkinson’s August 5, 2009 – this is the synopsis taken directly from the Environmental Health News website: “Rural residents who drink water from private wells are much more likely to have Parkinson’s disease, a finding that bolsters theories that farm pesticides may be partially to blame, according to a new study. The risk to people in California’s Central Valley was 90 percent higher for those who had private wells near fields sprayed with certain insecticides. People with the incurable neurological disease were more likely to have consumed private well water, and had consumed it on average 4.3 years longer, UCLA scientists reported. Unlike municipal water supplies, private wells are largely unregulated and are not monitored for contaminants.”
Chicago water: In public reports, city silent over sex hormones and painkillers found in treated drinking water July 14, 2009 – Just another instance of pharmaceuticals showing up in public drinking water supplies.
